Featured Book of the Week

[RECOMMENDED!] Smart Pumping for People with Diabetes, edited by Howard Wolpert, MD. Pubished by the American Diabetes Association. 2002. Paperback, 181 pages. $16.95. ISBN 1-58040-125-2.

Book Cover

Smart Pumping for People with Diabetes is an excellent guide to managing diabetes using an insulin pump. Edited by Howard Wolpert, MD, the book is based on educational materials used at the Joslin Diabetes Center and is published by the American Diabetes Asssocation. Filled with dozens of charts and graphs, and written in easy-to-understand language, Smart Pumping starts with the basics of pump therapy, including how to figure out basal rates and insulin sensitivity -- essential for determining bolus amounts. Several sections are devoted to nutrition and how different foods are covered using extended boluses. There's even a discussion about how to manage with a pump should you have to go to the hospital. The only shortcoming in this book is the complete absence of references to non-ADA sources of information. There's nothing about the other books about pumping, and nothing about the Insulin Pumpers web site. If you're looking for a good, easy-to-read reference for insulin pumping, Smart Pumping will fit the bill, but it cannot be the only book in your pumping library. Recommended for anyone considering or using an insulin pump.

Ask the Diabetes Team
I suspect my daughter has hypoglycemia, like me. Her fasting test results were fine, but the doctor's office did not schedule more tests after telling me three were needed. What should I do? (20 Jul 2008)
-- Answers to over 18,350 questions
-- What's your question?

From the Diabetes Dictionary
Somogyi Effect
A swing to a high level of glucose (sugar) in the blood from an extremely low level, usually occurring after an untreated insulin reaction during the night. The swing is caused by the release of stress hormones to counter low glucose levels. People who experience high levels of blood glucose in the morning may need to test their blood glucose levels in the middle of the night. If blood glucose levels are falling or low, adjustments in evening snacks or insulin doses may be recommended. This condition is named after Dr. Michael Somogyi, the man who first wrote about it. Also called "rebound." See also Dawn Phenomenon, Rebound.

Diabetes Humor
Last week, Scott took Daniel and Jesse to Raceway Park in New Jersey to see drag racing, funny car races, etc. The other night, at about 11:15 pm, the house phone rings. I picked it up to hear Daniel say, "389." I said, "What did Jesse eat? Didn't the Navigator alarm? What's wrong?" I'm kind of panicky. Daniel laughed and said, "Ma, what are you talking about?" I said, "A blood sugar of 389 is nothing to laugh about!" My brilliant son said, "Ma, I don't know what you're talking about. But Dad just filled up your gas tank at $3.89 a gallon."

My name is Beatriz Vala (AKA Bia) and I'm 14 years old. I live in Portugal, in a village near Leiria, called Porto de Mós. Last year, in 11th October, I discovered that I have diabetes type 1. When I discovered my diabetes, I had already started school and I was drinking lots of water (5 liters a day). I urinated very often and I was always hungry! So, once when my dad came home from work, my mom sad to him that I needed to see a doctor because I wasn't ok. So my dad called my great aunt. She's a doctor and also has type 1 diabetes! He told her how I was and she sad that it was better I went to the pharmacy to get a blood glucose test. So I went and it was 425 mg/dL! This took me to the hospital, where I stayed 2 weeks.
